We're having a Thanksgiving EVE dinner instead of the traditional Thanksgiving DAY lunch because of family schedules. I decided to create a new look for my dining room table in preparation.
I ran to the fabric store a few days ago and bought some really cheap Fall-looking fabric, some ribbon, thread, and yards of really inexpensive felt. With no real direction or idea of what I wanted to create, I knew something would come to me.
My first creation was to cut the patterned fabric in to 18" squares. I got out my ancient serging machine and stitched a rolled edging and made some dinner napkins. I love that machine. The edges turned out so professional looking with the contrasting thread.
Next I laid out the yards of felt across my dining room table, took a salad plate and drew some scallops along the edge of the fabric. I took a pair of scissors and cut along the line. The nice thing about using felt is that there was no stitching involved. I only had to do a little measuring and then some cutting. (warning: don't use permanent marker to draw if you decide to do this. My 40 year old plate is marked for life I'm afraid)
I did a little practice run with the total look to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I had a wreath of Fall Flowers that I used as a table runner. You've seen my early marriage dishes in previous posts. The pattern is Noritake 'Homecoming'. It is perfect for Thanksgiving. I love my dishes!
I love how the table cloth turned out. It cost around $12 total to make it so if something spills on it, I'm not going to fret about it. I'll just toss it or cut it up and make something else.
I have some little foil leaves I found in my craft box so I just tossed them randomly across the table.
Here's a closeup of the finished napkin. I just used some old napking rings I had stored away.
I love this wine bottle 'cozy' that I got as a gift several years ago. It goes perfectly with the motif.
I think we're set now. I love Thanksgiving. It's absolutely my favorite holiday. I look so forward to having everyone over. I'm hoping the weather will be nice so we can have the chiminea burning pinion wood outside. I plan to leave some leaves on the ground so my Floridian sister can experience a true Fall.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving!
Well, your table looks lovely!! As usual, your project turned our beautifully. You get such joy creating your projects. Right?? Have a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with your family!! I know they will enjoy your pretty table setting!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the new format! It allows me to see your project that much closer and to truly appreciate your photos. Their color, clarity and composition is superb -- sounds almost like the 3 C's of diamonds! They are really jewels! I am job-hunting and did not get to catch up on November until today. It was very good for my disposition. You are so wonderfully talented!
ReplyDeleteA great project. Try using hair spray to remove the black marker from your plate. It works better than nail polish remover, and this trick works on plastic, too.
ReplyDeleteSharon, thank you for another great tip. I had never heard of using hair spray.
